We're traveling around the world!
Our ticket for this adventure is Books!
We've visited:
Columbia
Biblioburro: A True Story from Columbia, by Jeanette Winter
Luis loves to read and soon he is running out of room for books in his house. He comes up with an ingenious solution...he acquires two burros, Alfa and Beto, attaches his books to them in packs, then heads off through the Columbia jungle to remote locations where the villagers have no access to books.
Japan
Two friends - one boy from the fishing village, the other from a farm on the mountainside. Both have to deal with the tragic effects of a tsunami. The characters learn that it is in the face of danger that one becomes brave, and life needs to be appreciated as the wonderful gift it is.
Zimbabwe
(The book doesn't exactly specify which country in Africa this story is set, so we decided it would be Zimbabwe because the author was born and raised there.)
Akimbo and his family live on a game preserve in Africa where his father is a ranger. Akimbo loves animals and wants to help on the preserve anyway he can. Ivory poachers are killing elephants for their tusks and Akimbo sets out to stop them, by himself!
There are more books in the Akimbo series: Akimbo and the Lions, Akimbo and the Snakes, Akimbo and the Baboons, Akimbo and the Crocodile Man.
France
10-yr old Marcel has the responsibility to watch the "family's fortune", their cows, on a pasture high in the French Alps. He is charged by his father to keep to himself, to never interact with the other boy in the neighboring pasture. A series of circumstances force Marcel to interact with Pierre, and we find out that they save his life and the life of his cows, as well as change the whole village for the better. We discussed how Heavenly Father can use inconveniences and trials to actually save us and further His purposes.
Christmas
We read several Christmas stories before we commenced our Christmas break. I'll admit that I'm having a hard remembering all of them! Oh, my aging brain!! I'll ask the kids as I know they remember better than I.
Spain
I'll post more of our adventures after each destination.
